In a stunning display of power hitting, Shimron Hetmyer propelled the Seattle Orcas to a thrilling victory over MI New York in the 2025 Major League Cricket (MLC) season. Hetmyer's heroics secured a three-wicket win with a last-ball six, completing the highest successful run chase in MLC history.
The winning moment: Shimron Hetmyer sends the ball flying for six.
The Orcas were set a daunting target of 238 after MI New York posted 237/4, fueled by a spectacular unbeaten century from captain Nicholas Pooran. Pooran smashed 108 off just 60 balls, decorated with 7 fours and 8 sixes. Tajinder Dhillon provided valuable support with a blistering 95 off 35 deliveries.
Despite the onslaught, the Orcas bowlers, Gerald Coetzee and Kyle Mayers, managed to grab two wickets apiece, briefly slowing the scoring rate.
Seattle's chase began shakily, losing openers Josh Brown and Shayan Jahangir early in the innings. However, Mayers (37 off 20) and captain Sikandar Raza (30 off 9) launched a swift counter-attack, reigniting the chase. Heinrich Klaasen also contributed a quickfire 26 off 13 balls before falling to Rushil Ugarkar.
Then came Hetmyer's show.
With the required run rate escalating and wickets falling, Hetmyer shifted gears, unleashing a barrage of boundaries. He remained unbeaten on 97 from a mere 40 deliveries, smashing 5 fours and 9 towering sixes at a remarkable strike rate of 242.50.
The game reached its climax on the final ball, with five runs needed for victory. Facing MI New York captain Kieron Pollard, Hetmyer delivered, flicking the ball over fine leg for a six that sparked jubilant celebrations in the Seattle camp.
"This one is one of the best, because our backs were against the wall," said Hetmyer, who was named Player of the Match. "Today is one of those days, where I went with a clear mind and wanted to take the game as deep as possible."
